February 17, 1387 – Jogaila’s Privilege to the Bishop of Vilnius

Jogaila’s privilege to the Bishop of Vilnius was issued during the Christianization of Lithuania. By this privilege, Grand Duke Jogaila established the Diocese of Vilnius, granted it secular investiture, and defined its landholdings. To provide for the bishop’s maintenance, the Tauragnai castle and volost were donated (with full immunity, exempt from any duties or obligations), together with the estates of Verkiai (now part of Vilnius), volosts of Bokštas and Dubrovna (both in present-day Belarus), as well as the villages of Labanoras and Molėtai, and several plots and houses in Vilnius. This privilege marked the beginning of the Catholic Church’s landownership in Lithuania and laid the foundation for the bishop’s jurisdiction in Vilnius.
