The Giedraitis Family Coat of Arms

The most important part of the coat of arms is the shield, which depicts a hippocentaur holding a bow. A hippocentaur is a variant of the centaur used in the coats of arms of Polish and Lithuanian nobility. The image of the centaur represents the role of a divine being—a messenger of divine will—which means that an era of direct contact with the gods was not foreign to our lands.

The Giedraičiai coat of arms features the crown of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and shields edged with white ermine fur.

The base of the shield has a curved bottom—a Spanish-style shield—and the shield’s base is white. The color white was equated with silver; its planet is the moon, and it symbolized purity, hope, innocence, and grandeur.

The body of the hippocentaur’s horse is black. The planet associated with the color black is Saturn, and this symbolized caution, wisdom, and readiness for trials. The serpentine tail of the hippocentaur in the coat of arms is yellow.
